Back again for 2024

It’s that time of year again! The Vancouver Super League is starting up for the Fall 2024 season.

The 2023 session ended with a classic 5 set battle between Duradek and Dunbar Cycles, with Duradek eventually securing the win (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v7wXXu1Tdk). They have enjoyed the championship title and  trophy for the past 9 months and know it is time to put it on the line once more. The season will begin on Sunday, September 29th at 4:30 pm.

This season sees the return of all teams except Bridge Athletics. There are changes in the athletes and some changes in team sponsors, but the competitive level and quality of volleyball remains extremely high. Also returning is the location for all matches. Delview Secondary School will feature a new floor design this year and will still have an open door policy for all fans and spectators who would like to come out and watch high level men’s volleyball for free. Finally, we will also be livestreaming the games on our YouTube page (@vancouversuperleague4436), so be sure to subscribe and never miss a chance to watch the action.

If you have volleyball experience at the college level or higher and would like to join our community of athletes, and potentially a team in the league, please go to www.vancouversuperleague.com and register as an individual.

If you are a business interested in supporting local athletics and would like to join our list of league or team sponsors, please reach out to Kent Laubman at klaubman@deltaschools.ca for more information.

Final weekend before playoffs

The regular season play for the Vancouver Super League is wrapping up this Sunday, November 12th, at Delview Secondary School.

The season has been very competitive, with the possibility of three teams finishing tied for 3rd place, and the top 2 teams playing each other for the privilege of finishing first. Earning the top spot in the regular season grants that team a bye into the semi-finals.

Every match this weekend has implications for playoff seeding. If Duradek earns the win against Vancouver United in the 4:30 pm match, they will be in the hunt for a 3rd place finish. If Vancouver United wins, they could finish as high as 5th.

Playing in the 6 pm time slot, if Dunbar Cycles wins against Apex Volleyball, they will force a tie-break situation for 3rd. If Apex pulls out the win, they will lock up 3rd place. A great rebound from last year’s result where the team barely missed making playoffs due to a few heartbreaking 5th set losses.

The final match of the evening is a heavy-weight bout featuring GLC and Bridge Athletics, the 2 teams sitting atop the leaderboard. GLC is looking to ruin Bridge’s so-far perfect season by handing them their first loss in the league. Doing so would vault them into the top spot. Bridge Athletics has been highly competitive all season and have no plans to relinquish their standing or playoff advantage.

The league finals will be happening on Sunday, December 3rd, at Delview Secondary. Start planning to come out and watch what promises to be one of the strongest finals of league history!

All schedules and results can be found at vancouversuperleague.com, previous match videos can be viewed on the website or directly through https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO9CrHr7JK_L6EjWj8zmJOg.

2023 is off to a strong start!!

Welcome back everyone!

We are excited to start up the Vancouver Super League once again for 2023. This year is exciting as it sees the league grow to 7 teams, with many returning teams and the introduction of 2 new teams.

Returning for the season are last season’s champions GLC, Dunbar Cycles, Duradek, Apex Volleyball Club, and the return of Forte under the new name Overtime Charters. Introduced to the league are Bridge Athletics and Vancouver United.

League started strong with all 3 matches requiring either 4 or 5 sets. We started the year off with a repeat of last season’s championship match, Duradek playing GLC. Missing many of their regular players, Duradek faced a similar fate to last year and lost in 4 sets. GLC picked up exactly where they left off 2022 and showed why they are perennial contenders for the title.

The second match of the day featured Apex Volleyball playing against rookies Bridge Athletics. Bridge was also missing some key athletes in their line-up but managed to hold on for a win. Apex Volleyball played with their trademark style and continued their 2022 trend of going to 5 sets, ultimately falling 2 sets to 3.

Our final match of the night featured Dunbar Cycles playing Overtime Charters. Both teams showed good early season form as they battled out to a 3 sets to 1 victory for Dunbar.

As always, spectators are always welcomed and encouraged to join us at Delview Secondary School in Delta for the matches. Entry is free. All matches can be found on the Vancouver Super League YouTube channel.

Always check in at vancouversuperleague.com for full schedules and results or to learn more about the teams and athletes.

Game On

Week 1 of the 2022 Fall Vancouver Super League season has wrapped up. It was great getting back into the gym and competing in front of an audience once again.

Week 1 featured 3 exhibition matches, allowing teams the opportunity to shake off some rust, work on different lineups and tactics, and figure out some of the unique aspects of the VSL.

The first match up at 4 pm saw league regulars team GLC competing against the Capilano University Blues. A bigger bench and lots of youthful enthusiasm helped the Blues find some success against the veteran GLC men but ultimately fall 3 – 1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23).

The second 6 pm match had Apex Volleyball Club playing against newcomers 604 Volleyball Club. The experience and familiarity of the Apex team carried them past the athleticism and energy of the 604 Club 3 – 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-22). 604 will be a team to keep an eye on as the season progresses and they become more familiar with the league.

The final 8 pm match of the night had League sponsor Dunbar Cycles playing current reigning league champions Duradek. This was a classic 5 set match with teams trading blows and shaking off rust. In the end, the serve and pass game from Duradek was superior and carried the team to a 3-2 win (29-31,25-19, 25-19, 23-25, 15-9).

You can watch the final match of the night on the Vancouver Super League YouTube channel or at the following link: https://youtu.be/MECh_Kadx8M

All future matches will be live streamed to the YouTube channel. Be sure to check in and cheer on your favourite teams and athletes!

This Sunday will see the start of the regular season with the following games:

4 pm – Dunbar Cycles vs Apex Volleyball Club

6 pm – 604 Volleyball Club vs Fourte

8 pm – Duradek vs GLC

All matches are played at Delview Secondary in Delta, B.C. and admission is free.

Remember when…

As the start of the Fall 2022 season rushes towards us, it’s a great time to reflect back on the last gold medal match from the Vancouver Super League. Pre-pandemic 2019 seems so far away and as though so much has changed, but the competitiveness and athleticism remains unchanged.

Team Vancouver Elite managed to outlast team Duradek to win the title. With the Elite not returning to the league in 2022, who will fill the void? The league is comprised mostly of returning teams, but there are some notable new additions to the rosters.

Team GLC had added 2 former Team Canada Olympians in Rudy Verhoeff and Daniel Jansen Vandoorn. Team Dunbar Cycles has brought in former Team Canada B team member Jordan McConkey to patrol the middle. Team Duradek has added international experience by bringing in Gabriel Burlacu who has represented Canada on the FIVB beach volleyball tour and Lars Bornemann who played professionally in Austria and the Czech Republic. There are lots of other new local additions to rosters as well.

Take some time to enjoy the gold medal video from 2019 and get excited for the new season in October!

Rosters are Filling Up

Are you new to town? Have you been around for a while but maybe have stepped away from high quality volleyball for a while? Have you got the ability and interest to play great volleyball but don’t know where to go or who to talk to in the Vancouver and Fraser Valley area? The VSL might just be right for you.

The Vancouver Super League is the highest quality volleyball in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley areas outside of Usport competition. We are a league of former: post-secondary athletes, professional volleyball players, national team members, and Olympians. We are always interested in including the highest caliber athletes available, and we recognize that it can be difficult to play here if you do not know many other athletes. With that in mind, the VSL has a free sign up form for potential athletes and we host an open gym showcase before the start of the season to allow athletes to make connections and demonstrate their abilities on the court for potential teams.

If you would like to join our community of high caliber athletes, please enter your information here: ATHLETE REGISTRATION.  Your information will only ever be shared with team managers. You will be only ever be contacted about upcoming VSL events or by teams asking you to play. Athletes who are not picked up by a team to play full-time will still be available to be a substitute athlete for the season.

Teams are currently actively recruiting with openings especially for middle attackers. Be sure to sign up to be notified about this year’s pre-season showcase.

We’re back for the 2022 Season!!!!!!

Elite men’s volleyball in the lower mainland and South Fraser area is returning after a 2 year pandemic hiatus! The Vancouver Super League is excited to be returning to Delview secondary school in North Delta, British Columbia. Athletes from the Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Delta, Surrey, New Westminster, Langley, West/North Vancouver areas are welcome to register their information to become available for potential selection on a team or in a substitute capacity.

The league features teams sponsored by local businesses who historically have represented either a regional area or alumni from a post-secondary institution. With a greater outreach to athletes, the league has designs to include more of the deep pool of talented male volleyball players from the Lower Mainland and surrounding areas. All interested athletes will be invited to an open gym evening at Delview Secondary in September as an opportunity to showcase themselves for the team managers.

The Vancouver Super League is played on Sunday afternoons/evenings with up to 3 best-of-five matches played. The atmosphere is highly competitive and also celebrates the positive social atmosphere which helps make volleyball such a fantastic lifelong sport. Spectators are encouraged and are welcome to the matches. There is no cost to fans!

If you are interested in entering a team to the league or acting as a team sponsor, please contact Kent Laubman at klaubman@deltaschools.ca. Teams must be committed by August 31st, 2022.

It is great to be back providing an excellent caliber of men’s volleyball to the community, and we cannot wait to see you at the games!
